  • Tumblr import

Manton added some new features to Micro.blog, one of them it’s the ability to import all your posts from Tumblr. I had forgot I had a Tumblr account! So I went ahead and imported all my post from that forsaken account to Mb and deleted the account right after. It was a very easy and quick process. It was kind of nice to go through all the old posts once they got imported. I found some old post that I had forgot about and also got a lot of good old pictures I had taken.

  • I did a thing!

Well, I did a thing. After so much thinking and “planning” in my head, I ended up doing something entirely different from what I said I would . Instead of getting the new iPad Air, I end up with an 11” iPad Pro. It was one of those things that just happened to work out perfectly I guess. I don’t have to many thoughts on the device other than the fact that I love the design, it’s pretty snappy and the size — love it. First thing I did was to download comiXology and, OMG, reading comic books on this thing it’s a delight! I am yet to get the keyboard for it, I’m picking it up tomorrow, so at the moment I am typing on the glass like an animal (😅) and even that isn’t bad at all. Now, what I am thinking on doing is to use this device exclusively for a week or two, for things I’d normally use my MacBook Pro for and see if I miss anything from the Mac or if I can survive and do everything with the iPad.

  • Have I made up my mind?

After a lot of overthinking, I think I have settled. It is kind of funny that after I posted about whether or not I should buy an iPad Pro, Apple announces a new iPad Air and a new iPad mini. Obviously I checked them both out (online of course). I have had an iPad mini in the past so I know that it is not exactly what I want. The iPad Air though, well that might be it. I think 10.5” it’s a nice size and less than 700 USDs for the “configuration” I’d like, it’s — to me and my necessities — a good deal. Still I would like to visit my local store and play with them all and get a better feeling, but so far I’m leaning towards the new Air.

  • Should I buy an iPad Pro?

This weekend, I laid out a plan to purchase a new iPad Pro by my birthday (March 31st). I’m specifically looking at the 11" and the storage is TBD. However, the more I look into them and look at the price tags, man, it’s kind of hard to justify it. I do a lot of my writing on iOS, or rather, I starts most of it on iOS (a 100 percent of the time it’s on my iPhone XS) but more often than not it’s either finished or entirely written on my 2017 MacBook Pro (no Touch Bar). I do own a 10.5" iPad Pro and, What do I use my 10.5" iPad for? Well, I mostly don’t use it, it is mostly used by my 3-year-old. She has some educational games she likes to play around with, she has Frozen (obviously) and YouTube (please don’t judge). When I use it it’s pretty much to read comics, something I haven’t done in a while I might add, but that is it! And that’s the thing, other than comics and maybe some media consumption, I really don’t use my iPad. Right now, I am typing this, sitting on the sofa using my MacBook Pro and why not on the iPad? Specially since my 3-year-old is in bed and I could actually use the iPad (🤔).

So it begs some questions. Is it worth it? Why do I even want to spend so much money in such device? Is it FOMO? Is it because I want to be part of the “New (cool) Kids on the Block”? Will it end up like the 10.5", used by someone else and neglected from me? Or What if I actually love it so much? What if I don’t love it? Am I overthinking all of this thus writing this post to somehow talk myself out of it?

I guess one way would be to actually visit my local Apple Store and play with one and see? (Actually I’d much rather go to my local Best Buy, there’s usually less people — I don’t like people). In any case, I will continue with my plan until I either make my mind or spend the money on something else. Or what if I add it to my Verizon plan, that’s one way to go about it. Pay it overtime and have my wife yelling at me asking why our bill it’s so damn high (😅).

    IN OTHER NEWS:

After a couple of months of maternity leave, wife got back to work today, hooray! Now it’s another adjustment we need to figure out, with schedules and taking and picking the girls to/from grandma-care, doctors appointments and all that parenting stuff — fun stuff.

  • Healthy Report.

Haven’t really made too much progress, at all. If I’m being honest I have failed to stick to the plan I have set out to do at the beginning of the year. I feel more and more unhealthy lately and that’s no bueno. I know I’ve got to do something about it but it’s been really hard to come up with a plan. I’m hoping things will get back to somewhat normal soon and then make a good plan.

  • 🔗 Can a Productivity Nerd Live Without a To-Do List?

    jilly.ca

Good read, I’m sure we all go through this every so often. There’s something that sort of resonated with me in this post.

not having a singular to-do list has made a positive impact on my life. I truly feel more focused and calm. I wish I’d done it sooner.

This is also something I have been playing around with. Just stop using a dedicated task managing system. Just really on calendar and reminders. There’s less anxiety when I’m not using one. The way I depend on project management can very well work with Reminders and Calendar alone. And guess what? Reminders does have a web app — sorta (😉).

  • The managers of them tasks, The Todoist/TickTick edition.

In my never ending, always evolving, quest to find the most suitable task manager (see how I said suitable not perfect), I think I have finally identified my needs and the way I want to really use these tools without too much mental friction.

This past week or so I have been playing with both Todoist and TickTick. The reason I have picked these two over the most popular choices (Things 3 and OmniFocus is because each one of them have an available web application. Unfortunately at work its windows only, furthermore we don’t even have PC’s, we use Virtual Desktops, aka VDI’s. Thus the reason why having a web application is paramount. There are other cool things like they both have natural language which makes creating tasks so so easy (I love it so much 😍). Again, having a way to access these applications via web is very important — to me that is.

TickTick sort of strikes me as a much matured version of Todoist. They both sort of behave exactly the same except for a few features. This might sound weird to some people but design-wise I prefer Todoist, It’s the most simple and minimalistic of the two, and I like that about it. Not to many bells and whistles. It shows all your tasks and lists on one single page-view, love it! TickTick’s design it’s a little different, I don’t find it as minimalistic, I really don’t like the side bar to access your lists and folders, really not a fan. I do like though, how it shows all your tasks and events in one single list, that I like.

Another thing that Todoist lacks that TickTick does well it’s calendar integration. It is nice to have all your upcoming events and tasks in one place. With Todoist I always have to pair it with a calendar app (whether is the stock calendar app or a third party one) and juggle between them. Not a huge deal but one place to get all your information it’s always nice.

Todoist’s web app, just like the iOS app has a very minimalistic design and navigating it it’s a breeze. Whereas TickTick’s seems a little clunkier. Then again I’m running these websites on a VDI so everything so the experience isn’t great to begin with, however, it’s my live environment. There have been a few instances where I am trying to add a tag to a task and TickTick’s website kind of freeze on me or is not as quick, there’s definitely some lag. With Todoist’s, I haven’t had any issues whatsoever — yet. Sync between the web app and the iOS apps are pretty quick on both applications (thumbs up).

As an Apple Watch owner, I like my complications. The Watchface I have always been a fan of and use all the time on the series 4 is the Modular Infograph. Todoist doesn’t have complication support for the Infograph watchfaces yet, unfortunately. On the other hand,TickTick does have support for Infograph Complications, which they are nice to have. Still not sure how important this is to me if I am being honest. I mean, I kind of like having a number somewhere showing me how many tasks I have for the day, I think. (🤔,🤷🏻‍♂️)

So far I believe both task managers can very well suit my needs. I think ultimately it’ll come down to which one I feel more comfortable with. Which one would give me a better experience and functionality. My Todoist subscription won’t expire until mid April, TickTick’s by the end of March. I think I’ve got plenty of time to decide I’d say.

The ideal scenario though, would be if Things had a web application. This is an app that I already own, on both Mac and iOS, there’s no subscription for it and I could make it work for me just fine (probably). The idea of another subscription bothers me a little bit, simply because I already have too many (🤫). I know OmniFocus is currently working on a web app but OmniFocus is not what I want or need, right now. Or even a better scenario would be if I had a Mac at work instead (😃). That, would be swell. Wouldn’t it?

  • Dororo

I am a sucker for Japanese Animation, I could probably talk about it for hours but not today. A few days ago my wife found this tv anime show called Dororo, on Amazon Prime. Today I finally had a chance to check it out. As I’m watching it, it started to bother me, like I have seen or read this story somewhere before. Turns out! It was on a video game I had played a long long time ago. The game was Blood Will Tell for PlayStation 2, published by SEGA back in 2004. Based on the manga series from the manga creator Osamu Tezuka in the late 1960s!!!

I am only 1 and a half episodes in and it’s great! I mean, not only I’m familiar with the story but it’s feudal Japan type scenery, swords and daemons. I don’t need to much to be sold here.

  • A day in the life of a Marley Volume 2.

We have been having some issues with our 3-year-old Marley, potty training issues. When it comes to number 1 she’s got it down but when it comes to number 2 though, well that’s where we been having issues. We aren’t sure why or what it is but for whatever reason she just won’t do it. Even when we offered getting her a diaper on so she can go and do her business at her usual spot in the house, she’d refuse. She’d rather hold it in for days! Thus she wouldn’t eat or sleep well and all that not fun stuff. Well today my wife had it and threatened her to use an enema! Marley already went through this once before so she knows how that goes.

Anyway, I’m still at work, I’m messaging back and forth with my wife about it. Next thing I know I get an iMessage, with a picture…

I’ve never in my life, been somewhat happy about getting a picture of a turd, in a toilet! Marley decided on her own accord to go and sit on the toilet over having enema.

    Smart choice kiddo!

(No, I am not going to share such picture, worry not)

  • Getting back on track.

Today I have completed my first good workout in a while. I want to get back into it, no, I need to get back into it. Back to not just a better physical state but also a better mental state, I believe one comes with the other. I want to feel good and healthy, and also good about myself. Too many things in life, poor excuses and bad habits are the culprits of my current state. I think it’s time to change that!

A workout routine, I need to get serious about it, close those rings, be consistent and no excuses. Better nutrition, stop or reduce significantly my poor choices when it comes to unhealthy foods and snacks that have no nutritional value. Probably my biggest guilty pleasure right now are potato chips, pizza (which they love buying at work for almost any reason) and donuts, I’ve got to work on that. Also make sure I do all my meals through the day and drink more water! Less alcohol, drinking alcoholic (mostly beer) is probably my worst habit. One that got worse while I was unemployed, probably bored and depressed, I’d say. Though I consider myself a craft-beer enthusiast I feel like I have been drinking too much, too often and probably for the wrong reasons. Whereas before I would treat it more like a treat or reward to myself. It was more about the experience, trying something new and enjoy it without been too excessive. Definitely something that needs correction.

I think my biggest challenge on this it’s commitment, to stay focused, consistent and true to myself. I’m sure I’m going to need some help and establish some systems in order to stay on top of things. But if stick to my plans I’m sure I’ll to start seeing — and feeling — some positive changes and that will keep me motivated.

    I wish meself some luck!

  • Task managers, task managers...

This is a never ending topic for me! I own them all, I’ve tried them all — loved and hated them all. Lately they all have become, in one way or another, a cause of mental stress. Constantly moving from system to system and never been completely happy with them and stress free. So the obvious choice at this point is to go back to the basics, lists and simple reminders. For this purpose I have always been a fan of the stock Reminders app, except for the fact I don’t quite like the way it looks or it’s organized. And here’s where GoodTask comes in. I have always liked this app, it doesn’t give me mental stress other apps do. The best part is that it doesn’t require too much fiddling or setting up on my part. of course you can make things as complicated as you want of course. The app can be very powerful too, Tim Nahumck did an amazing overview of the app a while ago here.

Anyway, going back to “basics” kinda fits with my theme for this year of Simplifying. We’ll see how it goes.
